Stepping Back
Turning a vertical model of my parti into a horizontal conceptual massing with a potential for a future development proved itself a very difficult exercise. My initial thought was to use concepts of the parti, and not shape of it to make a massing.
Eventually, after hours of thinking, drawings, and modeling with clay I have made something I'm content with.
Model preserved all four aspects of the parti: roots, plane of ground, stem, and leaves. It is just as organic and fluid as the parti model.
Unless you stop me, I'm planning to start transforming shapes of this model into spaces of the future building. PS: My drawings below show my process of thinking starting from the half-circles until now. Half of the process I do in AutoCAD and 3D to see if my intentions can possibly be converted into habitable spaces rather then a sculpture.
No one can stop you now...Try executing the same impulses/ideas/forms in tectonic materials now. Don't take the cop-out and call it "concrete." That is cheating. Your ceramic skills are quite well developed. Make it inhabitable now. Some of your forms still lack volumetric translation.
ReplyDeleteMuch better. Let the roots of your building grow out of the site. Do not limit yourself to the four property lines.
ReplyDeleteInteresting! This experiment has animalistic features. It is compelling. I am curious to see how would you translate its organic attributes into space. My recommendation: do not make a literal translation when transforming these shapes to inhabitable forms. Try to think about space creation rather blindly reproduce a formalistic approach of your ceramic experimentation.
ReplyDeleteI would love for you to post your process of how you got here from your very rigid half circle program form. When I left you last week, you had some very interesting drawings and sketches which really started to show your process. These may be something to look at as you start to create spaces and incorporate your program.
ReplyDeleteI just updated this post with drawings, as you requested.
Delete... I'm getting desperate, it is already Saturday and I'm still not progressing.
Valentinov, think what the process was, and what are you trying to achieve. Your original model is extremely organic. One layer is transparent and grows out of a plane.
ReplyDeleteHow can that be translated into architecture. Your original idea had a lot of negative space. Do not loose that. Believe it or not your are progressing. Design is exploration and you are doing just that. There is not one solution to one specific problem.
