Massing Development & Model
Word "Renewal" model has become my parti:
According to the maximum allowable building footprint and zoning regulations I've made a 3D model representing a maximum building envelope (without and with possible overhang above the passage).
In order for the structure to represent my parti I need to implement fluid and branching circulation, and organic forms for the envelope. Outdoor circulation will represent roots of the plant; acceding circulation will represent the stem from which spaces (leaves) will branch of.
Below is the hybrid model which isn't a sketch model, but merely at attempt to understand the scale, proportions and relationships between spaces.
Vladislav, I want you to look at your "parti" and its organic interpretation. It is extremely fluid and dynamic. Can you try and translate that into space. Think back. What made you come up with such a strong model. When you design, we try to evoke feelings. Your 'parti" model does just that. Try to bring those emotions into your architecture.
ReplyDeleteGiven the wealth of study models you presented in your last post, I am disappointed that you did not take the approach of synthesizing several of the ideas into one comprehensive parti. It is important to remember that a parti does not have to be a one-liner. It is an approach, the "theoretical" basis and rationale behind your subsequent development. It could be construed as a cop-out to "pick" one and stick with it.
ReplyDeleteLia has a good point here that with the sinuous and organic forms you explore in the parti model, the architectural model loses the evocative feeling and affect both in form and spatial quality. As a rule of thumb, when massing out a site, work with 3-d building blocks. There is a great advantage to working with volumes rather than flat plates stacked up together. This will allow you to investigate sectional relationships in addition to planometric adjacencies. Spaces like a gymnasium which could be double -plus high will look vastly different as a taller item than, say support or office spaces which are only 1 story or so. Also, it is a bit early to lock in glass vs solid, as the massing will dictate the materiality. There is too much regularity in the model as you have presented it here. Have fun, put down the exacto and utilize a pair of scissors and a band saw. Pile up your blocks and then clad the pile. nothing is sacred at this stage. present the down and dirty, rather than a polished expression of false finality.
